Dinner Before a Nuggets Game Downtown β€” Where to Actually Eat

If you're heading to Ball Arena for a game, you've probably done the thing where you just wander the 16th Street Mall hoping something looks good, end up somewhere mediocre, and spend the third quarter regretting it. I've been there. After a few seasons of trial and error around downtown, I've settled on a short list of places that are actually worth stopping at before tip-off.

The one I keep coming back to most is Sam's No. 3 on Curtis Street. It's a diner, it's been around forever, and it makes no apologies for being exactly what it is. I went on a Thursday night before a game earlier this season and was in and out in under 45 minutes β€” which matters when you're trying to catch warmups. The green chile is the reason to go. It's the kind of thing Denver does better than it gets credit for, and Sam's version is legitimately good. Prices are low, the place is loud, parking in that stretch of downtown is the usual downtown situation, but it's close enough to the arena that you're not adding much walk time.

If you want something a little more sit-down without going full steakhouse, 5280 Burger Bar at the Pavilions Mall on 16th Street works well for a pre-game stop. The burger is better than it has any right to be at that price point, and being inside the mall means you're not fighting street parking. It can get busy on game nights β€” probably worth getting there a little earlier than you think you need to.

For the nights when you want to spend more and actually slow down, Panzano on 17th Street is my go-to. The pasta is solid, the room feels like a real restaurant rather than a tourist trap, and the service has been consistently good the few times I've been. It's a $$$-level dinner, so factor that in, but if you're already treating it as a night out, this fits. My wife and I went before a game last winter and had no trouble getting a table on a weekday β€” weekend nights are a different story, so a reservation makes sense.

Urban Farmer on Wazee is another option in that same price range. It's a steakhouse that takes its sourcing seriously, the cocktails are good, and the room has a nice energy on game nights when the crowd is already fired up. The walk to Ball Arena from Wazee is easy. Just budget the time β€” it's not a rush-through-dinner kind of place, and you don't want to be bolting out before dessert because you misjudged tip-off.

One spot I'd point people toward that gets overlooked is Chez Maggy on Market Street. The price is right, the French-leaning menu is a little different from what else is around there, and it doesn't have the same pre-game chaos as some of the spots closer to the arena. Worth knowing about if you've already done the usual rotation.

The Nuggets have been appointment television this season — between Jokić doing things that shouldn't be physically possible and Murray showing up when it matters, there's genuine energy around Ball Arena right now. The pre-game atmosphere in the building has been good too. Getting there fed and not stressed about where you parked makes the whole night better.

If I had to pick one for most people, it's Sam's No. 3 β€” fast, cheap, and the food is actually Denver-specific in a way that matters. If you're making a full evening of it, Panzano is the move.
