When I heard that CHICHA San Chen — the Taiwanese brand that's basically collected Michelin recognition for boba — was opening in Colorado, I figured it was worth the drive up to Westminster to see what the fuss was about. I wasn't walking in as a skeptic exactly, but "Michelin Star of Boba" is the kind of marketing language that sets you up for disappointment. It didn't disappoint.

What Makes This Different

The thing that separates CHICHA San Chen from your standard boba shop isn't the branding or the minimalist cups — it's how they actually make the tea. Most places batch-brew ahead of time or reconstitute powder. CHICHA custom-extracts each order from premium loose-leaf mountain tea, right when you order it. That's a slower process, which means you might wait a few minutes longer than you're used to. It also means the tea tastes like tea — not like a sweetened approximation of it.

The shop is at The Orchard Town Center in Westminster, which is one of those open-air lifestyle centers with plenty of parking and the usual mix of chain restaurants. Not the most atmospheric backdrop, but it's easy to get to and the space itself inside CHICHA is clean and straightforward.

What to Order

My recommendation is to go with the straight tea extractions rather than the heavy milk tea blends. The premium ingredient is the mountain tea itself, and the milk tea versions kind of bury what you're actually paying for. If you drop an extra dollar or two on a top-shelf tea, you want to taste it.

Order it with light ice and light sweetness. I went in the other direction on my first cup — default settings — and it was fine, but fine isn't the point here. When I scaled back the sweetness on the next order, the actual tea profile came through and it made a real difference. The price runs a dollar or two higher than what you'd pay at most local boba spots, which is worth knowing going in. It's not cheap, but it's not unreasonable for what you're getting.

What Surprised Me

I came in focused on the tea itself and wasn't expecting the ordering experience to require much thought. It does. The menu has enough options that if you're not paying attention to what you're selecting, you can end up with something that undersells the whole concept. The staff I talked to were helpful about pointing people toward the stronger tea options, which made it easier to navigate.

The freshness is legitimately noticeable. There's a clarity to the flavor that you don't get from batch-brewed tea — no off-notes, no staleness sitting at the bottom of the cup. If you drink a lot of boba and you've wondered whether the sourcing and brewing method actually matters, this is a pretty good place to find out that it does.

Practical Notes

Westminster isn't exactly a quick stop if you're coming from central Denver, but The Orchard Town Center location makes it convenient if you're already heading north or running errands in that area. Parking is easy. I'd go on a weekday if you want a shorter wait — I can see this getting busy on weekends once more people figure out it's there. And again: light ice, light sweetness, pure tea extraction over milk tea. That's the move.

If you've ever written off boba as a sugar delivery system dressed up in a cup, CHICHA San Chen is the version that might change your read on it. It's the real thing, done the way it was meant to be done, and it's now forty minutes from downtown Denver.
