Mall arcades are a dying breed. I grew up going to them, and watching them disappear one by one over the past couple decades has been genuinely depressing. So when Ka-Ko Jo's at Town Center at Aurora came across my radar, I was curious enough to make the drive out and see if it still had that classic arcade energy — or if it was just a sad row of claw machines next to a food court.

What You're Walking Into

Ka-Ko Jo's is inside Town Center at Aurora, and right away it's clear this isn't a half-hearted attempt at an arcade. The place is clean — like, noticeably clean — which sounds like a low bar but anyone who's been inside a dingy arcade with sticky floors knows exactly why that matters. The staff is friendly too, and that combination alone puts it ahead of a lot of similar spots. There's something about walking into a place that's well-kept and staffed by people who actually seem to want to be there that sets the whole tone for the visit.

Games for Kids and Adults

One thing I appreciated is that Ka-Ko Jo's doesn't feel like it's just targeting one age group and tolerating the other. There are games that work for kids — the kind that keep younger ones genuinely occupied — and there's also stuff that holds up for adults who want to get competitive. I've been to plenty of arcades where the adult-oriented machines feel like an afterthought, or where everything skews so young that you feel awkward being there without a six-year-old in tow. Ka-Ko Jo's doesn't have that problem. It felt like a place where a family with kids and a group of friends in their twenties could both show up and have a good time, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

Mini Golf and VR

Beyond the standard arcade games, there's mini golf and VR, which are both legitimately good additions. Mini golf inside a mall might raise some eyebrows, but it works — especially when the weather outside isn't cooperating. Denver's summers can get punishing and the winters are obviously cold, so having a spot where you can knock out a round of mini golf indoors without worrying about the heat or the snow is pretty useful. The VR component is the other big draw for anyone who hasn't had a chance to try it. It's the kind of thing that's hard to replicate at home and adds a dimension to the visit that goes beyond just feeding tokens into machines.

When to Go

If you have kids, daytime visits make a lot of sense here. The environment is set up well for families, and the clean, friendly atmosphere makes it easy to let kids run around and enjoy themselves without the chaos that some arcades fall into. For adults or groups of friends, it works just as well in the evenings when you want something competitive and social but don't want to be outside. It's one of those spots that fits multiple contexts without being specifically designed for just one.

The Honest Take

My one general note — and this applies to most mall arcades, not specifically Ka-Ko Jo's — is that these places work best when you go in with the right expectations. It's not a destination arcade with dozens of rare or vintage machines, and it's not trying to be. It's a well-run, accessible spot that covers a solid range of options for different ages and group types. For the Denver area, where finding a functioning mall arcade at all is increasingly rare, Ka-Ko Jo's is one of the better ones around. If you're out near Aurora or the Town Center mall anyway, it's worth walking in and giving it a shot — and if you're specifically looking for something to do with kids or a small group on a hot summer day or a cold afternoon in February, it's a pretty easy recommendation.
