Downtown Denver Has a Solid Italian Option and Most People Walk Past It

Why Windshields Crack So Often in Colorado ๐Ÿš— #shorts

Tavernetta has been on my list for a while. It sits right on the 16th Street Mall at 1889 16th St, which sounds like a tourist trap setup, and I'll admit that's what kept me from going for longer than it should have. A nice restaurant on the Mall felt like a contradiction. I was wrong about that, and the food made me admit it fairly quickly.

My wife and I went on a Thursday evening and got a table without a reservation, which I wasn't expecting given the reviews. The room is warm without trying too hard โ€” exposed brick, good lighting, the kind of place where the noise level stays manageable enough to actually have a conversation. We sat near the window and watched the usual 16th Street chaos outside, which weirdly made the interior feel even calmer by contrast.

What We Actually Ordered

We started with the pasta, which is where Tavernetta earns its reputation. The handmade pasta changes with the season but whatever was on the menu that night had a depth to it that you don't usually get at this price point โ€” and at $$$, it's not cheap, but it's not outrageous for what you're getting either. The portion sizes are reasonable rather than generous, which is either fine or annoying depending on how hungry you are. We were hungry, so we ordered more than we planned to.

The wine list is the other thing worth mentioning. It's Italian-focused and longer than you'd expect. Our server actually knew it, which is rarer than it should be. We asked for a recommendation in a specific price range and got a good answer without any upselling pressure.

What Works and What Doesn't

The pasta is the reason to come here. That's the short version. If you're ordering something other than pasta as your main focus, you might leave feeling like it was a good meal but not a particularly memorable one. The service was attentive without being intrusive, which I always appreciate, and the pacing felt natural โ€” we weren't rushed, but we also weren't sitting there wondering where our food went.

The location is the obvious friction point. Parking downtown is its own project, and the Mall itself can feel chaotic depending on the time of day. If you're already coming from that part of downtown, it's a non-issue. If you're driving in from somewhere else specifically for dinner, factor in an extra fifteen minutes and use one of the garages on Welton or California rather than circling. Street parking near the Mall on a weekend evening is a losing game.

It's also worth knowing that Tavernetta is one of those spots that does better on a weeknight. The energy on a Friday or Saturday shifts toward louder and more crowded, and the relaxed feel we had on a Thursday probably wouldn't have been the same experience. If you have flexibility, go early in the week.

The Honest Comparison

Downtown Denver has some solid Italian options. Panzano over on 17th has been a consistent performer for years and is in a similar price range. Both are legitimately good, and which one you prefer probably comes down to atmosphere more than food โ€” Panzano skews a little more formal, Tavernetta a little more relaxed. Neither is a bad choice, and I'd go back to both.

If you're trying to figure out what to do on the 16th Street Mall and you've already walked past Sam's No. 3 (which, for the record, is a completely different experience and also worth your time for a $10 breakfast), Tavernetta is the answer to "where should we actually have dinner." It's not a place I'd hype to someone visiting for a weekend as the one restaurant they need to hit. But as a downtown dinner option for people who live here and want something reliable with genuinely good pasta, it holds up.

Make a reservation if you're going on a weekend. Skip it if you can't get excited about Italian food. Otherwise, it's a pretty easy call.
